Feeling Unwell in Laos Today?
Yes, you can speak to a doctor online from Laos. For a non-emergency problem you can describe on camera, such as a stomach upset, a sore throat or a skin or eye problem, a Pomodoc video consultation costs €40 and tells you whether you can manage where you are or need to be seen.
Two things change that answer in Laos. A fever after time in an area where malaria is a risk needs prompt in-person medical assessment, not a video call, and FCDO says dengue and malaria are both endemic. And outside Vientiane, FCDO says there are no reliable facilities for a medical emergency, so a serious problem means calling for help early.
- Video from your phone, tablet or laptop
- In English from start to finish
- €40, shown before you book
- From a guesthouse, homestay or riverside bungalow
How Emergency Help Works in Laos
Calling an ambulance in Laos is not like calling one at home. FCDO's guidance is specific, and worth reading before you need it.
What FCDO says
- dial 1195 or 030 525 7239 and ask for an ambulance
- in Vientiane, volunteer ambulances run free: Vientiane Rescue (1623) and the Lao Red Cross
- check that anyone attending an accident wears a Vientiane Rescue or Lao Red Cross uniform, as bogus companies have tried to charge fees
- you may be asked to pay for an ambulance and treatment in advance; keep the receipt for your insurer
If you are referred to a medical facility, FCDO says to contact your insurance company quickly.
Where a video consultation fits
- a non-emergency problem you can describe and show
- deciding whether a long road or river journey to be seen is necessary
- questions about medicines you brought with you
- a doctor's view in English, for a fixed €40
A Pomodoc video consultation is €40, with an English-speaking doctor, wherever you are in Laos.
If you need to be seen in person, the doctor will say so.
Your consultation runs on Air Doctor's ISO‑certified platform (ISO/IEC 27001 & ISO 27799 for health data). See our security & certifications.

More About Online Doctors in Laos
Outside Vientiane, plan for distance
FCDO says medical care in Laos can be basic, that outside the capital there are no reliable facilities to deal with medical emergencies, and that medical evacuation is difficult to organise and very expensive. Its advice is adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds for treatment and repatriation.
That is the case for deciding early. A video consultation can help with the question of whether a problem needs the journey to in-person care; it is not a substitute for that care when it does.
Fever after possible malaria exposure needs prompt in-person assessment
FCDO says the rainy season brings an increase in dengue cases, and that dengue and malaria are endemic in Laos.
TravelHealthPro says anyone with a fever after travel to a malaria risk area should be evaluated urgently for malaria. If you develop a fever after spending time in an area where malaria is a risk, seek prompt in-person medical assessment rather than relying on a video consultation.
Cattle and buffalo in the south
FCDO reports anthrax in cattle and buffalo near the tourist areas of 4,000 Islands, Pakse and the Bolaven Plateau. Its advice is to avoid contact with cattle and buffalo, make sure meat is thoroughly cooked, and seek medical attention if you are exposed to infected animals or show symptoms.
Medicines
FCDO says international clinics, large hospitals and larger pharmacies in Laos can supply most prescription medication, and that this may be more difficult in remoter areas. Bring what you need for the whole trip.
Good things to know.
Can I see an online doctor while travelling in Laos?
Yes. Pomodoc offers €40 video consultations with English-speaking doctors that you join in your browser from wherever you are staying in Laos, for non-emergency problems you can describe on camera.
What is the ambulance number in Laos?
FCDO gives 1195 or 030 525 7239. In Vientiane, free volunteer ambulances are run by Vientiane Rescue (1623) and the Lao Red Cross. FCDO warns that bogus companies have attended accidents and tried to charge fees, so check for a Vientiane Rescue or Lao Red Cross uniform.
Do I have to pay for medical treatment in advance in Laos?
You may be. FCDO says you may be asked to pay for an ambulance and any treatment in advance, and to keep a receipt for your insurance claim.
Can an online doctor help with a fever in Laos?
Not if the fever follows time in an area where malaria is a risk. FCDO says malaria is endemic in Laos, and TravelHealthPro says a fever after travel to a malaria risk area should be evaluated urgently. Seek prompt in-person medical assessment.
How much does an online doctor in Laos cost?
€40 per video consultation, fixed. There is no subscription and no booking fee. Medication and any in-person care you go on to need are separate.
